Title: Relationship between family members’ oral health behaviours and status

Introduction: Family as a basic societal unit plays an important role in shaping the individual member’s oral health behaviours and status.

Aim: to investigate the relationships of lifestyle factors, oral health behaviours, and oral health status amongst different family members in Hong Kong.

Methods: A cross-sectional survey using a combination of a random household and a purposive sampling was conducted. The study population was 5 to 7-year-old children and their parents in Hong Kong.

Results: 432 families with targeted children, 373 fathers and 424 mothers were recruited. Positive correlations were found between the oral health behaviours and status of fathers and mothers, mothers and children, and fathers and children.

Conclusion: Oral health status are correlated among family members.

Title: Prevention of early childhood caries through training in parental toothbrushing and fluoride varnish application

Aim: To investigate the effectiveness of hands-on training in parental toothbrushing, with or without semi-annual applications of fluoride varnish in preventing ECC.

Method: Children aged 8-23 months were randomly allocated to three groups: a control group with one oral health education and two intervention groups, training in parental toothbrushing, with or without application of fluoride varnish. Clinical examination was conducted at baseline and 24-month follow-up.

Result: Out of the 450 children recruited at baseline, 415 children were examined after 24 months. The incidences of ECC in Gp1 to Gp3 were 11.9%, 11.8%, and 17.5%, respectively (p > 0.05). The mean dmfs scores in Gp1 to Gp3 were 0.3, 0.2, and 0.4, respectively (p > 0.05).

Conclusion: Above interventions may not have additional effect on preventing ECC.
