Title: Polyphosphate metabolism and its role in bacterial physiology and infection

Abstract: A ubiquitous inorganic biopolymer known as polyphosphate (poly-P) plays a number of important roles that enable bacterial cells to form virulent and persistent infections. Consequently, bacteria encode various different types of protein that regulate intracellular poly-P levels. In my talk, I will describe and discuss ongoing efforts to identify and characterize various protein families proposed to play a role in regulating bacterial poly-P levels. I will discuss how these proteins function at the molecular level, and how their biological roles affect overall bacterial physiology.
