Digitalculturebooks

Digitalculturebooks is an experimental publishing strategy with a strong research component. By making our content available in print and online, they intend to:

  • develop an open and participatory publishing model that adheres to the highest scholarly standards of review and documentation;
  • develop a model for press/library collaboration at Michigan and elsewhere;
  • showcase and extend Michigan’s leading role in the development of digital resources;
  • encourage and participate in a national dialogue about the future of scholarly communication.

Free PDFs at The National Academies Press

The National Academies Press is one of the only online bookstores that provides anyone in the connected world with free page-by-page access to all of our books. They began doing this in 1996 and have expanded this effort recently by providing many of the books in a downloadable format.

The National Academies Press is now offering many of its titles in digital PDF format. Hundreds of these books can be downloaded for free by the chapter or by the entire book, while others are available for purchase.  [Source: About PDFs at the National Academies Press]

Database cancellation: Academic Universe, ProQuest, and other databases

In order to lower the library’s recurring resource liability to compensate for its
budget deficit, the following three aggregated databases and table-of-content service will not be renewed upon their expiry on 31 December 2010.

Other alternative resources that will continue to be made available include EBSCOhost Academic Search Premier, Factiva and Lexis.com. Eligible users may also request needed materials via Interlibrary Loan.

More information on the library’s budget challenges and the steps taken to contain cost can be found in the September issue of FOCUS (see ‘Electronic Resources Rationalization). Thank you for your support with these difficult decisions.

For enquiries, please contact the Collection Development Department at libcd@hkucc.hku.hk.
