American Dialectic is an online journal committed to enriching scholarly publication, discourse, and intellectual development in Philosophy and related fields. As an organization, American Dialectic is devoted to publishing intellectually excellent articles and to promoting the dialectical development of ideas among a broad community of readers. This is accomplished by combining the best aspects of a traditional publication with the best aspects of a scholarly conference: lead articles are published on their website and then are followed throughout the publication cycle by edited responses that are written and submitted by their readers.

The publications will offer perspectives on the history of philosophy and its inveterate fields while at the same time keeping a mindful eye on important inquiries and novel explorations. With this in mind, their editing staff will actively seek out those articles that present strong philosophic material that is conducive to the developmental format of American Dialectic.

Sid Lapidus ‘59 Collection on Liberty and the American Revolution

In 2009, Sid Lapidus, an alumnus of Princeton University, gifted over 150 books, pamphlets, and prints related to the intellectual origins of the American Revolution to the Princeton University Library. The items there also cover the early years of the republic, efforts to abolish the slave trade in Great Britain and the United States, and the Revolution itself. These materials have been digitized and are available on this site. On the left hand side of the site, visitors will find listings of these documents organized by topic, creator, genre, and language. Visitors should not miss the exquisite edition of Thomas Paine’s celebrated “The age of reason: being an investigation of true and fabulous theology,” printed while Paine was imprisoned in 1794. It is a remarkable collection, and the site also features a link to additional supportive materials for school curricula offered courtesy of the Gilder Lehrman Institute for American History.

Public Housing Transformation and Crime: Making the Case for Responsible Relocation

As the city of Chicago began the plan to transform its notoriously poorly-run Chicago Housing Authority in the early 1990s, many wondered what would become of its residents and the surrounding communities. This recent report from the Urban Institute looks into the “complex relationship between public housing transformation and crime in Chicago and Atlanta.” Authored by five different researchers at the Institute, this 11-page document takes a close look at crime rates in the communities that relocated public housing residents into private-market housing. The report notes that the effects were “not the simplistic relationship implied by media accounts, but rather a complex picture of declining crime rates in both cities, a small net decrease in violent crime citywide associated with the transformation efforts, but effects in some neighborhoods—those that received more than a few relocated households—that suggest that crime would have been lower in those neighborhoods had there been no public housing transformation.” The report includes a number of helpful charts and summary statistics, and it will be most useful to policy analysts and planners
